Can a police officer read my text messages?

The police cannot take your cellphone and read through your texts without reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed or is about to be committed. If the officer has obtained a search warrant from a court, then your text messages can be read. There are also situations where a “warrantless” search may be done - when it’s a matter of life or death and there’s no time to obtain a search warrant.
