Judge Tom
Dear Janet: The majority of states do allow minors who are pregnant to consent to their own prenatal care meaning the parents do not necessarily need to know and/or to consent to their kid’s prenatal care. Click here to read more about this and to find the specific law in NY. Even if you can go to the doctor of your choice without your Mom knowing, it would be best to get her on board with your plans for prenatal care, birth, etc. Perhaps you could try talking to her and having a calm, mature conversation about this. Check the Teen Health category in our Directory for more info. Please take care of yourself and your baby. (Check our Resource Directory for more help and resources in your area. This is information only – not legal advice.)
