It depends on the specific law in your state. Click here to review a chart of all states’ laws about receiving mental health treatment (inpatient or outpatient like counseling) and whose consent is required (a parent or is the minor’s consent enough to receive treatment). In many states, minors are given authority to consent to their own mental health treatment, but you may have to be a certain age like at least 14 years old or even older. Review the requirements for your state and then make sure that the information is still current as laws are constantly changing. Judge Tom is the founder and moderator of AsktheJudge.info. He is a retired juvenile judge and spent 23 years on the bench. He has written several books for lawyers and judges as well as teens and parents including 'Teen Cyberbullying Investigated' (Free Spirit Publishing) and 'Every Vote Matters: the Power of Your Voice, from Student Elections to the Supreme Court' (Free Spirit Publishing).
