Students recognized for TV productions
Lee County School District in Florida has a video internship program where students learn the skills of video production. Some are also paid minimum wage for filming different events and producing videos for the district’s television channel.
In March, 2010, several students were recognized for their student television productions. The local chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences judged all entries in categories including public service announcements, long-term fiction, non-fiction and for the district’s video news magazine.

Some of the winning entries were a PSA titled “Texting While Driving.” It was a one-minute announcement showing a man leaving his office and driving around town texting. At the end, he crashes his car and an on-screen text message reads “Message Received”. Another award winning entry concerned cyberbullying. Both subjects have been in the news recently due to legislative concerns about anti-texting while driving laws, and the recent suicide of Phoebe Prince. In Phoebe’s case, nine students in South Hadley, Massachusetts were charged with a variety of crimes in March, 2010 related to her suicide on January 14, 2010.
