Our 15 year old left her purse at home which had her student I.D. She called my husband and asked if she could go home and ger her I.D. and bring it to school since she needed it to take a test. My husband swung by the house, grabbed her purse, and brought it to the school’s front office. He told the front office clerk that he was bringing his daughter’s ID to school. The man at the front knew our daughter (who is a very good, straight “A” student) and told my husband to text our daughter so she could come get her purse from the front office. My husband left and returned to work. We got a call later that our daughter was suspended because they found a small pocket knife in her purse. They stated on the report that she was “in possesion of a pocket knife.” My question is if they had a right to search her purse since there was no probable cause or justified reason to do so, and also if they can say she was “in possession” since she never brought the purse to school-it was dropped off by my husband so she could obtain her school I.D. She had the pocket knife in her purse because she was scraping paint over the weekend after she had painted some lockers for volunteer work at a volunteer center.
