I was caught shoplifting in Macy’s with a friend and we were charged with petty theft in the state of California but did not get arrested, we got a citation for a court date for August 29th of this year. I’m only 19 and it’s my first time offense. I showed up on my court date and was told i was not on file, to talk to the sheriff’s department. I was then told I’d receive papers within this month. Last night, September 16th I was visited by the sheriff who is handling the case and was asked for a statement. I told him what happened that day and was honest. I just want to know what will be happening after i receive the papers and what are they about? Could I also ask to do the deferred judgement? I do not have money for a lawyer.
