I live in Virginia, and the 4th amendment says that when searching a car, probable cause must be for a particular area of the vehicle. In United States v. Carter it was stated that “Probable cause must be tailored to specific compartments and containers within an automobile… the precise vicinity.” If the cop smelled marijuana in the front of the car, is it correct to say they have no right to search the trunk? meaning the case could be thrown out for false evidence?
