I am 20 years old and I was caught stealing at a local Alberston’s, this is my first offence. the item was only 5 dollars and I have to appear in court. I’m curious of what the charge is going to be for stealing something five dollars and what is the following up consequences. I don’t have a job I’m flat out broke, so I don”t have money for an attorney or paying court fines’. Please help me I want to get as much information as possible. You are probably facing a shoplifting or petty theft type of charge, which will depend on the laws in your state. Since this is your first offense and the amount stolen was small, you may be offered a diversion program. This means that upon successful completion of the program, the charges would be dropped and therefore, you would not have a record. When you go to court, ask the judge or court officer you will meet with whether more community service hours is an option instead of paying a fine. They be able to work with you on this issue. Good luck. -Judge Tom
