High percent of teens have fatalistic view

In a new study* of 20,000 teenagers, almost 15% think they’re going to die before age 35. Their sense of fatalism stems from feeling hopeless which leads them to risky behaviors including drug use and suicide attempts.

The study was conducted over a seven-year period between 1995 and 2002. During that period, the teens were interviewed three times. Those who had greater exposure to violence and hardship were more likely to believe they would die young. This included low-income, Black and Native-American teens.
