Judge Tom
Dear Anon: Whether you’re pregnant or not, leaving home without your parents’ or guardians’ permission at 17 could have consequences like being picked up by the police for being a runaway. Perhaps you could try talking to your parents and let them know how you feel and where you would like to live. If they’re willing to let you move out, then there may not be a problem. Otherwise, you may need to wait until you’re 18 or emancipated. We encourage you to talk to an adult you trust about your circumstances whether it’s a teacher, school counselor, relative or friend’s parent. There may be other options for you depending on your exact circumstances like homes for pregnant teens who may not be safe at home with their parents. You can read more about the emancipation process in Kansas here. Good luck. (Check our Resource Directory for more help and resources in your area. This is information only – not legal advice.)
