State laws concerning compulsory attendance hold parents responsible for the absences of their children, whether excused or unexcused. Once the number of absences exceeds a certain limit, that is when the potential consequences kick in for both the parent and child. During your son’s court appearance, try speaking with the judge or probation officer about your circumstances and ask for suggestions. Perhaps a stern talk from a probation officer may make your son think twice about continuing to ditch school. He could have to repeat a class or even grade if he misses too many days. Finally, an honest conversation about why he’s ditching may help reveal other issues affecting his school attendance. Exploring other schooling options could be beneficial for the both of you. Good luck. (Check our Teen Help Network for more help and resources in your area. This is information only – not legal advice.)
