My situation is pretty crazy. What happend was I was pulled over in December (I live in VA by the way) for a taillight out and the cop noticed my registration had expired. I was so nervous and was struggling to find my registration because my car was a mess so the cop took my VIN number off my car directly and my physical registration once I found it. Now, I was on my way to a secret Santa party and had a bottle of alcohol in the passenger seat along with a gift. I had not been drinking but the officer saw the bottle. The officer came back and asked me to step out of the vehicle. He asked if I had anything I wasn’t supposed to like guns or drugs. I said no. He said well there’s a bottle of alcohol on the seat. I told him I had not been drinking at all and it was for a gift for secret Santa that was right next to it. He asked if he could search the car and I said no because I was so terrified at this point and I told him that. He then proceeded to tell me my VIN number doesn’t match the one on my registration and they pop as two different vehicles. I told him I had no idea which I didn’t because I inherited this car from my parents who signed the title over at DMV with me. I then told him I just graduated college and my cap and gown was in the back seat and that I just became a teacher and wouldn’t do anything to jeapordize that. He told me to hang tight back in my car. He came back and issued me a ticket for the expired registration and gave me one for fictitious plates which is a criminal charge but said he was letting me go and giving me the benefit of the doubt. I immediately went to dmv the next day and was told I needed a VIN inspection. I filled out the application for one and took a 90 minute trip to Richmond to hand deliver it and paid $125 for the inspection. I have copies of all of this paperwork. The VIN inspector came a few weeks later and passed my car but decided to do more research. He said he can see it was a DMV error as far as the mix up but he’s currently trying to track down the other vehicle and verify so he can finalize everything. With my efforts and all my paperwork I’ve accumulated on the matter, can you please tell me if you think I’m going to go to jail? I mean I’m having constant anxiety attacks. I really didn’t do anything and I’m so scared the judge is going to just send me off anyways.
