Coaches “out” teen to her mom

PreviousNext
Skye Wyatt Kilgore HS Texas

Skye Wyatt was 16 years old and on the softball team at Kilgore High School in Texas. For some reason her coaches decided to have a talk with her about her relationship with another girl. Then they called Skye’s mother to the school to meet. They proceeded to tell her that Skye was gay. At that time, Skye hadn’t come out to her mom.

This happened in 2009. Skye sued the school district for invasion of privacy. Her lawsuit was settled in 2014 with the district agreeing to pay $77,500 without admitting any wrongdoing.

As part of the settlement, school administrators agreed to conduct an annual training session for employees on privacy and discrimination. They also agreed to publish an antidiscrimination policy in the district’s employee and student-parent handbooks and on its website.
