Dear Aria: Since you are still a minor, you are required to obey your parents (Mom) unless her decisions are illegal or putting you in danger like in the case of abuse or neglect. However, if your Mom is willing to let you live with your boyfriend and his parents, then there shouldn’t be a problem. Think about what you want to say to your Mom and then ask to have a talk with her. If you let her know how you feel in a calm, respectful and loving way, you may be surprised to realize that she’s on your side and her previous threats were just talk. As for her threat of calling the police, there may be nothing for them to do since you are the age of consent (the legal age to consent to have sex). In Illinois, the age of consent is 17. You have rights concerning your unborn child, yet your mother is still responsibility to take care of you and make decisions like where you should live. If you need further information concerning your rights over the baby, please talk to a counselor at your school or Planned Parenthood. Take care of yourself and your baby.
