What if I use a fake ID?

This looks like the real thing, doesn′t it? Actually, it is. It′s an identification card showing the real cardholder, but the statistics are false. Peter′s birthdate is wrong, as well as the address. When Peter bought this for five dollars at a park-′n′-swap, he was only seventeen years old. He successfully passed himself off as twenty-one and was able to buy beer on several occasions. Then one night a liquor store clerk asked Peter for additional ID, which he didn′t have. Peter was caught.

Using a fake ID is against the law and is either a misdemeanor or petty offense. It doesn′t make any difference why you′re using it or where. You may be trying to get into an age-restricted club, movie, or pool hall, or even enlist in the armed forces.

If you′re caught using a fake ID and don′t admit to your acts, an additional charge of false reporting may be filed. Any attempt to mislead a police officer to avoid getting into trouble usually backfires. Law enforcement and the courts take into consideration your statements when first contacted by the police. If you break the law, you′re better off being honest and straightforward when questioned.
